If you’re in Perth and feel like a breath of fresh air, you’re in luck. There are plenty of beautiful national parks just a short drive away, perfect for a weekend adventure, scenic walk, or picnic with friends. Here are some of the best national parks to check out in and around Perth!

1. John Forrest National Park

Just 30 minutes east of the city, John Forrest is one of WA’s oldest national parks. It’s home to waterfalls, walking trails, and lots of native wildlife. The Railway Reserves Heritage Trail is popular for walking or biking, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a kangaroo or two along the way. It’s also a great place for a BBQ or picnic.

2. Yanchep National Park

About 45 minutes north of Perth, Yanchep is a great spot for families. There’s a koala boardwalk, plenty of walking trails, and even a cave you can tour. You can paddle on the lake, spot kangaroos lounging in the grass, or just relax in the peaceful setting. It’s also great for wildflower spotting in spring.

3. Serpentine National Park

Located about an hour south-east of Perth, Serpentine is known for the stunning Serpentine Falls. Pack your swimmers in warmer months and enjoy a dip at the base of the waterfall. There are also walking trails with scenic views and picnic spots surrounded by nature.

4. Beelu National Park

Right near Mundaring in the Perth Hills, Beelu is perfect if you’re after peaceful bushland and sweeping views. It’s a quieter alternative with lovely trails, and you can visit Mundaring Weir while you’re there. It’s a great spot for a slower pace and some quiet time in nature.

5. Walyunga National Park

This park sits at the edge of the Swan Valley, about 45 minutes from the city. It’s known for its river views, granite boulders, and picnic areas. The walk along the Swan River is beautiful, especially in winter when the water is flowing strong. You can also spot plenty of wildflowers and native birds.

6. Avon Valley National Park

A little further out, around 90 minutes from Perth, this park offers sweeping views over the Avon Valley. It’s a peaceful place for hiking and camping, and if you go in spring, the wildflowers are incredible. It’s less busy than other parks, so it’s perfect if you want to escape the crowds.

7. Lane Poole Reserve

Technically a reserve, not a national park, but it’s too good not to mention. Located near Dwellingup, about 90 minutes from Perth, Lane Poole is great for camping, swimming, kayaking and bushwalking. It’s a popular weekend spot with lots of campsites along the Murray River.
