Artist in Residence: Alana Hunt

Artist in Residence: Alana Hunt

09/06/2025 - 21/06/2025

From Monday 9 June, the State Buildings is proud to welcome Alana Hunt as our next Artist in Residence.

Continuing our commitment to supporting the visual arts through connection and conversation, Alana will reside at COMO The Treasury and work from her open studio, The Mark, for two weeks.

An artist and writer of national and international acclaim, Hunt is known for her long-term, research-driven projects that sit at the intersection of contemporary art and social commentary. Her work explores the emotional and political dynamics of public and social space, often drawing from over a decade spent living on Gija and Miriwoong Country in Northwest Australia.

With a practice that spans photography, film, publishing and public intervention, Alana’s work offers powerful insights into the ongoing realities of colonialism, law, development, and home.

As part of her residency, Alana will take up residence at COMO The Treasury and open the doors to her studio at The Mark for two weeks, with visitors invited to step inside the artist’s world. Here, they’ll meet Alana, explore her process, and engage with the ideas behind her practice.

The residency will also be accompanied by a curated program of public events, offering unique opportunities to hear directly from the artist about the stories that shape her work.

  • A Very Clear Picture – Alana will reflect on her work on Miriwoong Country, particularly the development of A Very Clear Picture (2020–23), a compelling body of work created during a residency with the Kimberley Land Council’s legal team via SPACED’s Rural Utopias program. The project critically engaged with the WA Aboriginal Heritage Act (1972).

  • Surveilling a Crime Scene – A screening of Alana’s award-winning short film, Surveilling a Crime Scene, shot on Super 8mm, examining the architecture of colonial presence in the north-west town of Kununurra. The film draws links between land, infrastructure, tourism and violence, subtly revealing how colonisation is maintained in everyday life.

  • COMO Conversation with Alana Hunt – In conversation with PICA CEO, Hannah Matthews, Alana will explore her broader practice across Australia and South Asia, with insights into her forthcoming solo exhibition A Deceptively Simple Need at PICA this October.
